Longwa – The Village with Dual Citizenship

Longwa is a unique village of Konyak Naga tribe of Nagaland in India and Myanmar. The village is spread over both in India and Nagaland, in Mon district of Nagaland in India and The Sagain Range of the Republic of Myanmar(Burma). Villagers here injoys dual citizenship and they can freely move between India and Myanmar without any restriction. Interestingly the house of the King of Kanyak Nagas (ANGH) is situated in the middle of the border of India and Myanmar, One part is in India and the other part is in Myanmar.

How to go to Longwa:

Longwa is a remote village in the district of Mon in the state Nagaland. It can be accessed from Sivasagar, the nearest major destination of Assam, or from Sonari, which is the district headquarter of the Charaideo district. The distance from Sivasagar to Longwa is approximately 130 Km and the distance from Sonari is approximately 83 Km. The road condition is overall good and one can easily cover the distance in 5 hours. The nearest major Trainstation is Simaluguri and Sivasagar and the nearest Airport is Dibrugarh. Private taxis are available from Sonari, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh Airport.

Activities to do at Longwa:

  • Village Tour – The whole village is located on the international border which is a unique feature. One can enjoy the beauty of the location specially the greatness of the Patkai Mountain Range. The Flora and Fauna of this village is mesmerizing.
  • Visiting to Morung Ghar – Visiting to the Morung Ghar spread across several places of the village is a unique experience.
  • Observing the remains and memories of old Head Hunting tradition of the Konyak tribe which is stopped around 1960.
  • Trekking to the Border Posts spread across the Area.
  • Visiting the King’s (Angh) house which is divided by the international boundary, one part is in India and the other part is in Myanmar.

Where to Stay:

Right in front of the Angh’s House, there is one Travellers Inn with basic accomodation and local Food. The location is great. There are few other homestays nowadays developing. Camping is another option with due permission from the village authority.
